The Pharaoh was surrounded by people who held the title 'smer', which meant friend. Their task was to watch over the king, and go with him during his official visits. Another role was even more coveted: to walk beside the king during processions, carrying a fan. On epitaphs of some people who held official functions, we find the title 'rekh nesut', which means "known by the sovereign ".
Life in the Royal Court was regulated by a strict etiquette. According to their rank, the courtiers would stand closer or further to the sovereign.
